The Pacifist Memorial

The bronze statue of Mohandas K. Gandhi was commissioned by the Peace Abbey and unveiled on October 2, 1994, his 125 birth anniversary.  The sculptors are internationally renowned artists from the Republic of Georgia, Lado and Shake Goudjabidze.

This important granite and bronze marker reminds us that when nations engage in war, animals and the environment bear the brunt of the destruction and death that occurs.  Yet, when the death toll is taken, only human animals are considered worthy enough to be counted.

THE PACIFIST MEMORIAL

Dick Gregory honored with bronze plaque on Mother’s Day, 2022.  Lillian Gregory, activist wife of Gregory will be receiving the Courage of Conscience Award as part of the unveiling.

The Pacifist Memorial was created as a community service project by the students and staff of The Life Experience School in 1994 as a result of the inspiration of President Kennedy’s quote regarding conscientious objection. Students and staff worked for over two years on the project and borrowed money against the equity of the Schoolhouse to create what has come to be known as America’s Memorial to Pacifism.

Bearing witness to humanity’s long-cherished pursuit of justice and peace through nonviolence and love, the Pacifist Memorial is located on the grounds of the Peace Memorial Park in Sherborn, Massachusetts. On October 2, 1994, the 125th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, The Pacifist Memorial was dedicated. In the face of ethnic conflict and struggles for liberation, we remember Gandhi, who accomplished the freeing of a multi-ethnic, religiously diverse people through the power of love and nonviolence alone. Radiating out from the statue of Gandhi are six brick walls, on which are recorded the names of and quotations from over sixty pacifists. Some are well-recognized, others lesser known, but each athisfeetcontributed courageously to the path of peace, facing misunderstanding, hardship, and often death in its cause. A select committee examined a number of nominations before choosing the initial sixty; other names and quotations are added to the Memorial on an ongoing basis.

At the end of each of the six brick walls is a bronze plaque with one of the 12 prayers for peace of the major faith traditions of the world. Together they form the Peace Seeds Rosary, drawn from the prayers offered in Assisi, Italy in 1986 and entrusted to the students at the Life Experience School.
